The Strickland Arms: Where Penny’s Pies Reign Supreme

Welcome to The Strickland Arms Blog – a place where we can share our love of great food, hospitality and all things Cumbrian.

Today, we are delighted to introduce some newcomers to the menu - and gently boast about Penny’s culinary masterpieces at the same time. (Don't tell her, she's very modest!)

At The Stricky, we believe that food is not just sustenance; it's an experience, a celebration of diverse tastes and preferences. That's why our extensive menu is a treasure trove of culinary wonders, lovingly crafted with a dash of tradition and a sprinkle of innovation. From the aromatic curries that transport you to exotic lands to the comforting pies that evoke memories of home, we've got something to make every heart sing.

Our dedication to good food extends beyond mere words; it's woven

into the very fabric of our menu. We take great pride in offering a diverse selection of dishes that cater to all dietary preferences, and we're committed to accommodating allergies and intolerances whenever possible. We source locally whenever we can, supporting local Cumbrian businesses, whilst reducing food miles. It's a win:win.

Ah, but did we mention the pies? Brace yourselves for a journey into the heart of British comfort food – the savoury pie. It's a love affair that spans centuries and continues to captivate generations.  As a nation, we're positively smitten with this delightful pairing, and it's no surprise why.

Believe it or not, the origins of the humble pie can be traced all the way back to the ancient Romans. Our love for pies continued through the ages, and it wasn't until the late 16th Century that fruit fillings made their grand entrance -  allegedly Queen Elizabeth I was the lucky recipient of the first cherry pie -  and a sweet sibling to the savoury sensation we all adore was born.

But back to our menu. Let me just tempt you for a moment: Picture this – golden, flaky pastry enveloping succulent meats, a tantalising blend of textures and flavours that makes every bite a moment of pure joy. Imagine the rich, hearty goodness of our classic Steak and Ale pie, tender chunks of meat bathed in a delectable ale-infused gravy. Or the Chicken and Leek Pie, where succulent chicken and the gentle sweetness of leeks embrace in an enticing duet of flavours. And as for my personal favourite, the Lamb and Ale pie – it's an absolute showstopper, and a rare combination to find on a menu. Penny's mastery ensures that every pie that leaves her kitchen is a work of art, made with love and a sprinkle of culinary magic.

Just when you think it can't get any better...remember the newcomers, we mentioned at the beginning? We're thrilled to introduce not one but two exciting new flavours to our eponymous pie menu – why not try our Venison Pie, or tempt your tastebuds with the new Game Pie.  All tucked into Penny's signature pastry perfection. Consider that first crack in the crust, as you release the alluring aroma of slow-cooked heaven...

So, come on over, food-lovers, and discover the warmth of our hospitality, the delight of our diverse menu, and the magic of Penny's Pies.

Of course, you don’t have to have the pie…
